Apostle of Hustle – Il Motore – Friday, November 27th

Around nine o’clock, looking around, the turnout must have been disappointing to both bands, there couldn’t have been more than twenty people inside. Opening was Silver Starling, a Montreal band, headed by Marcus Paquin, lead vocalist and guitarist, who shared the stage with his wife Marika Shaw, who played violin, keyboards and added backing vocals, Gad Lambert, guitar and banjo, Peter X, bassist, and drummer, Liam O’Neill. They performed songs from their self titled debut album, and “Ghosts” was a particular crowd pleaser. All in all they played a set filled with tension, that captivated the audience.

Throughout Silver Starling’s performance Il Motore slowly filled, as more and more people arrived to see the main attraction. Having never heard Apostle of Hustle live before last night, I had no idea that the duet I was seeing is normally a trio. Despite the fact that Julian Brown, who plays several instruments in the band, was not present on this night, the band hardly lost anything in their sound and luckily for us, Andrew Whiteman (guitar and vocals), and Dean Stone (percussion), the band’s other two members, really know how to put on a show . In front of panels decorated in Eats Darkness themes, the duo performed with tremendous energy. Whiteman’s antics, such as spraying a mouthful of vodka over Stone, kept the audience engaged and Stone’s impressive drumming really kept the show moving. The set list included “Cheap like Sebastien” and “Blackberry”, with “Eazy Speaks” and “Xerses” played in the encore.

Despite the rain it was definitely one of the best shows I’ve ever been to, so next time Apostle of Hustle has a concert in Montreal, buy a ticket, you absolutely will not regret it. – Rebecca Huot
