Review: Ohbijou – November 5th – Club Lambi
I must admit I had never heard of Silver Starling until last night but from what I saw they really seemed to have it together. The band is led by guitarist Marcus Paquin who seemed to really have a command over his instrument, which makes sense considering the bands he has played with in the past (Stars, Arcade Fire). They’re music was quite loud but had a sort of soft sentimentality to it, with each member swaying along blissfully to the sounds emanating from their instruments. After the one song I got to hear I was immediately disappointed that I hadn’t had a chance to catch the rest of the set but I was even more excited to buy their album and hear what their recorded music sounds like (Yes, I am currently listening to them as I write this. Loving it.)
On to the main attraction, Toronto, Ontario’s Ohbijou. I felt like I had sort of a connection to the band from the get go since I had a great conversation with two of the members earlier. But nevertheless, Ohbijou really made the night for everyone. Their performance was spot on, the sound for their set was as good as can be and they really interacted with the audience and made them feel almost as if they were friends of the band. Lead singer, Casey did a lot of chatting to the crowd during the set and had everyone cracking up. In between songs she told the audience a little bit about her father the birdcage maker, who also made books ends and shoe horns. Quite a random set of skills, I know, but it made for good banter none the less. They played most of the songs from their excellent latest LP, Beacons, to the delight of the crowd, who really just couldn’t get enough of these ultra-talented youngsters from Toronto.
In the end, a great time was had by all, bands and audience members alike. Here are some photos from the show:
