Arctic Monkeys + Parlovr – Metropolis – Monday, December 14th, 2009
The night started off with Montreal band Parlovr, who definitely did a great job of warming up the crowd. This three piece band had catchy upbeat songs, perfect to pair up with the mighty Arctic Monkeys. Their most popular song “Pen to the Paper” really got the crowd into the show and the energy that these guys displayed was nothing short of incredible. From the screams of lead singer/guitarist Louis Jackson, to the force and liveliness of drummer Jeremy MacCuish and keyboardist/guitarist/singer Alex Cooper, these guys are multi-talented musicians who certainly know how to put on a good show.
After a short break, the Arctic Monkeys walked on stage to a cheering crowd. From the first note of “Dance Little Liar” the crowd was very much into the show. Not long into their second song, “Brianstorm”, a mosh pit started. For a band that seemed relatively calm onstage, their fans definitely aren’t. Towards the middle of their set, they played “Crying Lightning” during which everyone on the floor and even many on the balcony began jumping up and down. The atmosphere in Metropolis was energetic and lively. They played many songs from their latest album Humbug but everyone seemed to be waiting for their most famous song, “Fluorescent Adolescent”. It was their final song and lead singer Alex Turner had the entire audience to sing along with. Halfway through the song drummer Matt Helders walked to the front of the stage to sing a short cover of “Last Christmas” in the spirit of the holidays. The mixture of singer Alex Turner’s great vocals and charming British accent, the guitar solos of Jamie Cook, the intense bass lines of Nick O’Malley and the beat and occasional serenading of drummer Matt Helders made for a perfect performance.
After leaving the stage, the crowd naturally wanted more, so they returned with “Secret Door” and “505″, two great songs to end the show. At the ending of the show, each member of the band sincerely thanked the crowd and showed their apreciation to the Montreal crowd. All in all, it was an unforgettable show and The Arctic Monkeys no doubt know how to put on a phenomenal performance. – Leanne Craigmyle
