Top 20 Albums of 2009: #18 Julian Casablancas – Phrazes For The Young
This long awaited and highly anticipated debut solo effort from Casablancas is called Phrazes for the Young. While the album may only be eight songs long, there really isn’t a dull moment to speak of. Casablancas isn’t the first of the Strokes to put out a solo effort. Guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. has already put out two solo records of his own, bassist Nikolai Fraiture has recently released his debut album with his side project Nickel Eye and perhaps the best of all of these side projects is Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti’s Little Joy. But if this was a contest, Julian Casablancas’ debut would be at the top of the list or damn close to it anyways. Phrazes for the Young shows us exactly who the driving force is behind the Strokes. Whether it be the album’s opener and ‘Strokeyest’ song “Out of the Blue” or the bluesy “4 Chords of the Apocalypse” or the dancey “11th Dimension”, this album may not have quantity covered, but is definitely strong on the quality side of things.
