Top 20 Albums of 2009: #6 Grizzly Bear – Veckatimest

Critically acclaimed, Veckatimest brought to us a brand new record full of what we’ve come to love from Grizzly Bear.  Raw, woodsy indie folk-pop.  With Ed Droste-led vocal harmonies (which, at times, bring to mind Fleet Foxes) and smooth acoustic guitar melodies leading the way, it feels fresh and new, but still keeps with the Grizzly Bear sound we have come to know – a sort of cavernous energy created by their sparse song arrangements. What is different about Veckatimest, in contrast to their previous two records is that there is a bigger sound.  The approach is more aggressive, which certainly helped the record, energy-wise; the rocky “Fine For Now” being a good example.  In the last few years, Grizzly Bear have risen from the ground to become one of the more critically popular bands on the indie scene, and this record only adds to that. Highlights on this record include “All We Ask” and “Two Weeks.”
