Nightwood vs. Modernboys Moderngirls: The Tour
There will be no friendly sing-a-longs or kumbaya moments however. This tour will be a night by night battle royal with each band trying their best to outplay the other. According to MBMG drummer Brett Millius, Nightwood doesn’t stand much of a chance. “I feel bad for them”, said Millius, “I wouldn’t want to be the band who gets embarrassed night in and night out. So I guess I feel pretty damn good. Luckily there will lots of booze on this tour for Nightwood to drown their inevitable pain.” Nightwood’s Amber Goodwyn on the other hand sums up the whole joint tour with one sentence, “It’s like fencing with a narwhal.”
Does this tour really compare to the great hockey rivalry between the two cities that we’ve all known and loved? We asked both bands if the two were to square off in a no-holds barred hockey game, who would prevail? Here’s how MBMG Millius thinks it would go down, “I’m gonna be honest, Akira’s from Spain and Juan is from Venezuela and neither of these guys can skate. I’m the lone hockey player in the band (once upon a time I went by the nick name “Brettsky”). However, I get the feeling Amber & Erin won’t be making the Canadian Olympic Women’s team anytime soon so I’d say this hypothetical game would consist of both drummers, Jeremy and I, doing a one on one. And I’d win!! I think our 2 bands would have a much more interesting game of soccer.” Nightwood’s Amber Goodwyn retorts that “We’d play dirty – we’re basically the Hanson brothers (sistas?) of rock ‘n roll. Also, MBMG are from Toronto, so really it’s no contest.”
Them fightin’ words! Well you can catch all of the jibs and jabs of this rivalry live in a city near you. The tour has been going strong for a few days now with stops in Guelph, Windsor and London. Tonight the bands square off in Kingston, followed by Ottawa, Toronto and the grand finale, right here at Montreal’s Divan Orange.
Perhaps after all is said and done these bands will learn to love one another and this will be the first step in erasing all the negativity that has existed between the two cities over the years. But it doesn’t look good…As Millius states when asked if this tour may end the great rivalry, “No way in Hell. This tour is in no way a diplomatic peace keeping mission. In fact I welcome a good rivalry. Jeremy’s a great drummer but I have no intention of letting this guy show me up EVER! And Amber and Erin? Don’t even get me started. Let the games begin.”
