R.I.P. Kate McGarrigle

R.I.P. Kate McGarrigle

Kate McGarrigle was not a simple folk musician from Montreal, but rather a Canadian musical legend. Kate and Anna, along with Rufus Wainwright and Martha Wainwright (Kate’s children) make up one of the most important and influential families in music. Kate has performed with countless musical legends, including Leonard Cohen, Joan Baez, Lou Reed and Quebec’s own Gilles Vigneault. In 1993, she was given one of the highest honours as she became a member of the Order of Canada.

Simply describing Kate’s work as creative, inspiring and unique is not a fair description. She is one of Canada’s most treasured musicians, and will remain a musical icon for years to come. Kate’s passing is sad not only because it marks the end of her career as a musician and performer, but more so for her family and Canadian families everywhere. For many, Kate & Anna McGarrigle have been around as long as they can remember, and she will forever be a part of our lives.
