Before The Show: The Antlers – Il Motore – Wednesday, February 17th

I guess the first thing to discuss is the the band’s third studio album, Hospice.  It was the sort of album that grows on you, and as it does you start to uncover (like an archeologist) certain truths about the words sung by Peter Silberman.  You may also find that there is more to the this music than fuzzy lo-fi bedroom arrangements, but a fine display of atmosphere and sentimentality through the delicate placement of horns, synths, strings, guitars and drums.  Let’s not forget the vocals.  Okay, I’m not gushing; maybe I am.  The fact is that, like critically acclaimed films, this album is a fine work of art, and the critics (at the very least) grasped that.  They crafted a best-selling novel of an album.

In a recent interview, Silberman was quoted explaining, “What I don’t want is for people to come away inconsolably depressed, feeling like it’s a downer.”

The band have been getting bigger and bigger ever since the re-release of Hospice, and although the material on the album is not at all upbeat, it is big on depth and emotion, which is something that guarantees a great show.  Too many times shows get dull because there is not enough versatility among the band and it’s music, but there’s no doubt in my mind that the people in attendance on Wednesday will be pleased as the Antlers work is almost guaranteed to be even better live.

The Antlers have been on tour for sometime already, so they should be in top form as they take the stage tomorrow night at Il Motore with Montreal’s Golden Isles.

Tickets are $15.00 and available through Blue Skies Turn Black by clicking here.
