La Roux – Metropolis – Friday, February 5th
Opening the show, Yes Giantess immediately brought a high dose of energy to the stage with their multi-synth set up and lively pop choruses. As the venue started filling to capacity you could sense the energy climb in the bands performance. Serenading the crowd with their fun songs they wanted to make sure that the crowd would be ready for the party soon to come. The crew, native to Boston, was evidently better received than the Bruins, who by the way are on a 10 game losing streak.
When the stage lights went off it was clear that the crowd was ready to keep the party going. Considering the huge commercial success that La Roux’s self titled album has received, it was surprising to see a crowd that wasn’t buzzing with pre-teens anxiously waiting to dance around to “Bulletproof”. It was under the powerful synths of “Tigerlily” that La Roux emerged from the darkness and ignited the venue. Performing before massive panels of LEDs and surprisingly well controlled lighting, the crowd was submerged in a wondrous atmosphere free to experience the entire visual and audio performance.
After having performed the exclusive UK bonus track “Saviour”, “I’m Not Your Toy”, and “Quicksand”, singer Eleanor Jackson took a minute to denounce the many complaints circulating around the internet, that their sets were too short. Although it was probably not necessary, she explained that they only have material from their one album and have yet to fully create new pieces.
Songs such as “Colourless Colour” and “In For The Kill” were worshiped by the crowd who just simply couldn’t get enough. At the end of the set, a crowd, who still had plenty of energy to unleash, made the entire venue tremble and was rewarded with an epic “Bulletproof” finale.
Despite finishing at 11:15, after a one hour and fifteen minute set, the crowd could not have asked for more, and the Metropolis, which was packed solid, slowly began releasing the satisfied audience members back onto the streets. – David Gosselin
