Shout Out Louds + Freelance Whales – Cabaret JPR – Friday, May 7th, 2010

Freelance Whales introduced themselves to the stage with a quick, and very accurately accented, ‘Bonjour’, sounding almost more like Montrealers than the New Yorkers that they actually are. Their songs, consisting of simple melodies and singer Judah Dadone’s boyish vocals, flowed easily one from the next, without much rest in between. A few times during the set, their sound did threaten to border a bit on easy listening, however the dynamic of the group was saved by the addition of a couple earthier, folky tunes, as well as the last minute use of Doris Cellar’s vocals.

After a short break, Stockholm’s Shout Out Louds were welcomed to the stage by a rousing round of applause from the now packed Cabaret. From the outset, the band was completely in sync with the audience. Their catchy, 80s inspired melodies had quite a few of the, up until that point subdued audience members dancing, or at the very least swaying and bobbing their heads. Although they kept up quite an instrumental variety in their songs, throwing in flute and accordion along with the more traditional synths for good measure, they had a consistently high energy, and managed to capture the audience’s attention from start to finish. Everything about their performance seemed light and effortless, giving it a positive feel-good vibe. They seemed to be enjoying themselves, and we, as an audience, were certainly having a great time. The effect, overall, was incredibly energizing, and I left feeling glad that I’d gotten the chance to see it at all. – Kyla Gilbert
