M On The Quays 2010

M On The Quays 2010

Biz Markie, who since the 80s has been putting out albums and acting among other things, was a very late addition to this year’s M on the Quays lineup but he was certainly a welcome one. While I’m sure many people probably had no idea who the man in front of them spinning some of the classic hip hop tracks from the last 30 years was, or the fact that he was the one responsible for that “Just a Friend” song, everyone that packed into the quays last night seemed to be having a very good time, despite the chilly weather. Ask the kids in the front row for Le Matos set what the weather was like last night and I bet they couldn’t tell you because they were just losing their shit for the Montreal electro trio. For the better part of an hour these guys pumped their heavy bass through the old port and when they were through people only wanted more, but the M For Montreal crew made sure everything went according to the schedule and the Biz man’s set would not be delayed.

This was only the last two hours of what was an entire weekend full of great music. Playing half an hour sets from 1:30 to 11:00 PM each day, this weekend we got a taste of some of Montreal’s best musical acts. Silly Kissers were a definite highlight (as always), as were SUUNS who we have been hearing a lot about lately. It was good to finally see what they could do in the flesh. Along with the many great anglo bands that played we also got a taste of some really awesome French bands this weekend. Orange Orange may be gimmicky but they really do know how to put on a party and their songs are actually pretty catchy. There were a lot of kids that came out for Tricot Machine but their music was far from childish. In fact that put on one of the more enjoyable sets of the weekend and if there was one band we’d have liked to hear an encore from it would probably be these guys.

In short I think it’s safe to say the weekend was a success. The music was great, the food was awesome (Dic Ann’s, Crepes and Sausages, what more do you need?) and even when it rained, the M For Montreal staff handed out ponchos and the music went on. Thankfully the rain only came in spurts and we were even rewarded on day two with a double rainbow during Orange Orange’s set. A big thank ou goes out to all the M For Montrealers who put this whole thing together. We can’t wait until next year. Here are some photos from the weekend. – Eran Dahan
