Pop Montreal Preview Part 3 (Friday, Oct. 1)
Deerhoof + Danielson @ La Tulipe
First off we’ve got San Fran weirdo-pop trio Deerhoof who will be coming town to play Pop Montreal this year with New Jersey off-kilter folk pop band, Danielson. While neither band has put out anything new in a little while, this still promises to be one of the most entertaining shows on the fest. For all the Danielson fans out there, this will be the first of two chances you’ll have to see the Danielson clan at this year’s fest. The band will also play tomorrow night at La Sala Rossa so be sure to make it out to at least one of their performances. Danielson will kick this one off at 8:00 PM and Deerhoof will follow at 9:15 PM. You can pick up tickets here for $17.00
Timber Timbre @ Ukrainian Federation
This is going to be one heck of a cozy-up-in-front-of-a-fireplace kind of show, if that makes any sense. Actually, it’s going to be quite the incestuous show…band-wise that is, because opening for the heart-filling, emotional Timber Timbre will be Ferriswheel, which comprises members of The Luyas and Timber Timber. We predict that it will be a lovely transition from folk stridden, classical-instrumental opener, to the bluesy folk of main act Timber Timbre. Ferriswheel goes on at 9:00 PM, followed by Timber Timbre at 10:00 PM. All this is happening at the Ukrainian Federation and tickets are available for $20.00 here.
No Joy @ Barfly
New comers to the indie music scene here in Montreal, No Joy, will be blasting their psychedelic surf-rock tinged punk tunes at the quaint and intimate Barfly Friday night. The California/Montreal Duo’s debut Ghost Blond LP will be released on November 16 on Mexican Summer, so they will definitely be showcasing some songs from that. Denver, Colorado’s Woodsman open the show at 10:00 PM, Toronto’s Little Girls go on at 11:00 PM, and No Joy take the stage at 1:00 AM. Tickets can only be purchased at the event, for as little 10$.
Cotton Mouth @ Casa Del Popolo
For all you music lovers who can barely pay rent, this show may possibly be the one for you. Having recently played this summer’s Osheaga Festival, Cotton Mouth are ready to blow some Montreal minds yet again, being the feature band of the night at the Passovah Showcase this year at Casa Del Popolo. As per usual, the Passovah crew have a pretty rad line-up laid out for us. You can take a look at it over here, but with people like Leif Vollebekk, Beaver Sheppard, and Oberhofer playing, we recommend you get there early and catch all the acts. The show starts at 8:00 PM, although Cotton Mouth will be taking the stage at 1:00 AM, but what is there to lose when tickets only cost 8$? You can nab one right here.
The xx @ Place Des Arts
There is no doubt in our minds that many people are pumped for this one. The xx are back and they will be playing a magical show at Place Des Arts. It has been an insane year for them and we expect things will only get better. Opening for them are the haunting melodies of Zola Jesus and LA experimental rockers, War Paint. The Californian bands will be the perfect openers for The xx, setting just the right amount of soothing, dark ambiance for the night. Zola Jesus will start things off at 8:00 PM, followed by War Paint at 8:45 PM, and The xx at 9:30 PM. Tickets go from 20-30$ and can be purchased here.
Amanita Bloom @ Il Motore
If you’re one of the many people who just can’t get enough of the deep, brooding blues folk of Montreal’s own Amanita Bloom then this show is for you. The sometimes creepy, sometimes powerful vocals, echoing synth driven songs filled with guitar hoedowns leave nothing to be desired. They will be preceded by some solid opening acts… one of which are actually called Solids. They’ll be taking the stage at 9:00 PM, followed by former Carnations singer, Thomas D’arcy’s solo project Small Sins at 9:45 PM, and retro-poppy sounding Panache at 10:40 PM. Amanita Bloom will be taking the stage at 11:40. Tickets can be purchased at the lovable Il Motore the night of the show.
Les Savy Fav @ Little Burgundy Pop Loft
The late night entertainment on Friday night will be provided by Brooklyn, New York’s Les Savy Fav. The loud, if I can permit myself to say, even boisterous-sounding group will be playing at Little Burgundy Pop Loft, promoting their newest release, Root For Ruin. For those who aren’t too familiar with these fellows’ live sets, they are pretty notorious for their stage antics, so get ready! Warming up the stage will be Holger, a five piece fun-loving Brazilian band, and our very own Pat Jordache, backed by two very talented drummers. Holger will be taking the stage at 11:30 PM, followed by Jordache at 12:15 AM, and Les Savy Fav are set to start at 1:00 AM. You can purchase tickets here for 20$.
The Dears @ Mission Santa Cruz
Ok this is getting redundant but this will be your last chance to see The Dears live at this year’s festival so if you missed them on both of the first two nights you better check them out on night 3 of Pop. Again, they will be playing their entire unreleased forthcoming album from start to finish so if you want to hear it before the rest of the world you better head out to this show. For this one, Alanna Stewart and My Little Cheap Dictaphone are opening. Tickets are $15.00 and can be purchased here.
