Pop Montreal Preview Part 4 (Saturday, Oct. 2)
Xiu Xiu + Braids + Valleys @ Ukrainian Federation
There are a lot of great shows planned for this year’s festival at the lovely Ukranian Federation. One of these shows is Californian indie-rock trio Xiu Xiu who will be playing with two of Montreal’s finest in Braids and Valleys. What a lineup! If you’re looking for one show to settle down at and watch from start to finish on Saturday this may the one. The show will kick off at 8:00 PM with Valleys, followed by Braids at 9:00 PM and then Xiu Xiu at 10:00 PM. Tickets are $15.00 and can be purchased here.
Think About Life + Jason Bajada @ Divan Orange
In the mood for a little afternoon delight? One of Montreal’s best live bands will be playing at Divan Orange on Saturday afternoon and they are called Think About Life. As good as the band sounds on record when they play their hit songs “Johanna” and “Havin’ My Baby”, they bring their songs to a whole new level when they play them live. With Miracle Fortress‘ Graham Van Pelt and Shapes & Sizes‘ Caila Thompson-Hannant in the band how could things go wrong? And with Jason Bajada as the show’s opener this show will almost certainly sell out so better get there early. Toronto’s The Golden Dogs kick things off at 2:00 PM.
Atari Teenage Riot @ Foufounes Electriques
Feel like raising a little hell at this year’s Pop Montreal Fest? This show just may be where to do it. There are a fair share of dance, rock, pop and electro bands playing at Pop this year but not as many hardcore electro-punk bands. So this is where Atari Teenage Riot come in. They have one of the most intense live shows around and after having conquered Europe they are now ready to bring the riot to North America. See it for yourself at Foufounes Electriques on Saturday night. Also playing this show are Toronto, Ontario’s AutoErotique and our very own Montreal Nintendo Orkestar. The show kicks off at 8:15 PM and you can purchase tickets here for $23.00.
Laurent Bourque + The Balconies @ 3 Minots
There’s a fun little showcase going on at 3 Minots on Saturday that is being put on by Indie Montreal. Headlining will be the buzzy Canadian indie-pop singer/songwriter Laurent Bourque. He may sound like a hockey player but we assure you that the only punches he throws are with his poppy melodies and heart-felt lyrics. Also playing are a lovely Ontario indie-rock trio called The Balconies and The Golden Dogs and rounding out the lineup for the night are Bend Sinister and Honheehonhee who will kick things off at 8:30 PM. Tickets for this one are only $6.00 when purchased in advance here or you can buy them for $8.00 at the door.
The Temper Trap @ Le National
Ok so the Temper Trap are pretty much like the Beatles now. Well maybe not, but you’d never know it judging by the way the crowd was losing their minds when the Australian quartet last played here a few months back. The show was at the Cabaret and if you were at that show and didn’t know the words to just about every song the band played you were in the minority. Well Montrealers, get ready to do it all over again as the band will be back in town this fall to play Pop Montreal on day 4. Opening up are Delphic and The Hundred in the Hands and tickets can be purchased here for $20.00.
Danielson + Shapes & Sizes @ La Sala Rossa
The Danielson clan are back on day two to make you laugh, cry, and dance like a fool. You can be sure the band will have plenty of energy left after their performance on day three opening for Deerhoof. Led by the muppet-like voice of lead-singer Daniel Smith, expect these quirky folksters to play a wide variety of tracks from their almost two decade long career as a band. And if we’re lucky maybe we’ll even hear something new! Montreal’s Shapes & Sizes will open along with Ben & Vesper and Helado Negro. Tickets are $15.00 and can be purchased here.
Marnie Stern + Parlovr @ Cabaret JPR
Any guitarists out there that think they’ve got skills should check out Marnie Stern over at The Cabaret on Saturday for a little reality check. This gal can shred like no other but she can also craft songs like not many can as well. Stern is currently on tour in support of her forthcoming new self-titled LP which will be released only a couple of days after Pop Montreal wraps up. You can pre-order the album right now via Kill Rock Stars by clicking here. Opening for Stern will be another one of our favourite Montreal bands, Parlovr so be sure to show up in time for their 9:30 PM start. Tickets for this one are $17.00 and can be purchased here.
Library Voices + The Hoof & The Heel + Ruby Coast @ Cafe Campus
Last but not least, here’s a more affordable, but nonetheless fantastic show of the night. The Last Gang/Musebox Showcase at Petit Campus will not fail to keep you tapping your feet all night long. The feature band are the infectious 8 piece Library Voices, but we really, really recommend you to see all the other acts as well. This includes grungy Ten Kens (8:00 PM), Brooklyn’s dancy Savoir Adore (9:00 PM), the radical Ruby Coast (10:00 PM), Montreal’s own indie-sweethearts, The Hoof & The Heel (11:00 PM), vintage-sounding Modern Superstitions (12:00 AM), and east-coast’s charming Paper Lions (1:00 AM). Library Voices are set to play at 2:00 AM. You can purchase tickets right here for the extremely affordable price of 10$. Go for it!
