Pop Montreal Preview Part 5 (Sunday, Oct. 3)

Scout Niblett @ La Sala Rossa

Pop Montreal may just have been saving the best for last this year with bluesy Portland, Oregonite Scout Niblett playing on the last day of the festival at La Sala Rossa. You will be drawn in by the amount of soul and passion that Niblett puts into her music and La Sala Rossa will be the perfect intimate setting for this show. Opening up will be Emil Amos latest project Holy Sons and Halifax, Nova Scotia’s Fall Horsie. Tickets for this one are $12.00 in advance and $15.00 at the door and car be purchased here.

Film School + The Depretiation Guild + Receivers @ Casa Del Popolo

Our highlight show of the night is the one that will be going down at Casa Del Popolo on Sunday night. One after another this show will feature some truly awesome bands. Starting with Montreal’s own indie rock five-piece, Receivers and then The Depreciation Guild who like to draw you into their dream world of shoe-gaze and 8-bit. Headlining will be bittersweet shoe-gaze five-piece piece Film School. While the band’s lineup has gone through a number of changes over the years one thing has remained the same and that is the quality of songs these guys are putting out, which is clearly demonstrated on the band’s brand new LP, Fission. The cost of entry for this one is $10.00 and you can pick up tickets right here.

Fred Penner @ The Rialto Theatre

We’ve already spoken about the legendary Van Dyke Parks playing this year’s Pop Montreal festival. On Sunday we will be treated to two more performances by another legend. This time it’s the legendary children’s entertainer, Fred Penner. After appearing on the Sharon, Lois & Bram show to play his hit song “The Cat Came Back” in 1984 Penner went on to star in his own succesful children’s TV show from 1985 to 1997 on CBC called Fred Penner’s Place. Since then Penner has continued to release albums of entertaining kid friendly jams and he will be paying us a very special visit this Sunday to play Pop Montreal. You probably will never get a chance to see Penner play live so you may want to check out one of his two shows at the Rialto this Sunday. The first show starts at 3:30 and the second at 7:00 PM. Tickets for the afternoon show can be purchased here and here for the evening show. Both shows are $15.00.

Sacred Sunday @ Ukranian Federation

Leading up to Pop Montreal 2010 we had a feeling that Montreal born Polaris Prize winner Patrick Watson would be involved. As the days went on it seemed less and less likely that something was going to be announced but a few days ago the news finally came in; Patrick Watson will be playing at this year’s fest. But this won’t be just your average show. In fact, Watson will be curating an event called Sacred Sunday at the Ukranian Federation. The event, which kicks off at 4:30 PM on Sunday, will be celebrating music written for god. So if you’d like to see Watson, along with Katie Moore, Socalled, Lil’ Andy, The Barr Brothers, Esmerine and more playing some old school gospel tunes this show is for you. Tickets are $15.00 and can be purchased here. Oh and the event is BYOBOC (Bring your own blood of christ).

Big Freedia & The Divas w/ Rusty Lazer @ Little Burgundy Pop Loft

Finally, Sunday caps off an amazing five days of shows with a double dose of rising transgendered ambassador for a new genre of music called ‘Bounce Music’, New Orleans native, Big Freedia. We feel the best way to describe Big Freedia is through the following video for the ever popular “Azz Everywhere”. And just so you know, Freedia will be teaching a bounce class at 4:00 PM at the Little Burgundy Pop Loft before taking to the stage for a performance at 2:00 AM the same night. Tickets are $15.00 and can be purchased here.
