Silk Screaming – L’Escogriffe – 09.01.10

Unfortunately, I missed most of the opening act, Laura Borealis and Le Look’s set. It’s impossible to predict how long your closest friend’s going-away party is going to take, but for the few minutes that I was present for the lovely tall blond lady and manly guitarist’s set, I could say that the music was interesting. It’s difficult to manage sound dynamics when you’re only a two member band, but the dancy pre-recorded tracks, sparse french lyrics, guitar riffs, and punk influenced vocals kept the ears stimulated.

When the five members of Silk Screaming took the stage, I was half expecting them to be that baby band that will not interact with the intimate crowd because they are still too uncomfortable playing live. Boy was I wrong! Right away, Roxanne, the vocalist of the band greeted everyone and thanked them for ditching their homework for the show. That already upped my enjoyment of the set by a long mile, because I had partially abandoned my own pile of readings at home for these kids. I can happily say that the somewhat punk tinged surf music did not disappoint. Their energy had already started off at high levels. I was quite in awe, staring as if saw some magical creature appear, because I wasn’t expecting them to be as good as they were. Although it might have been a mic problem, the vocals could have been a little stronger, but apart from that,  the guitar riffs were catchy, the bass lines strong, and the drums awesomely played… by a girl! How many lady drummers do you know of? That’s what I thought.

The communication within the band was also surprisingly good; they seemed to be feeding off each other’s energy very well and making the most out of the tiny stage they had. They played a few of their myspace tracks, like “Gone To Sea”, “Bigger Than Your Body”, and “Living In Constant Fear…”, but they also played a couple of new songs. One of which is apparently called “Boobs, Boobs, Boobs!” although I doubt this, considering the fair amount of giggling that was happening on-stage. They finished off with a high-packed energy song. Roxanne actually walked off-stage for a bit with her tambourine, and let a couple of people in the crowd play it as well. This, coming from a girl that is still shy of her 20th birthday. I tell you, I would have never had the guts to share my tambourine with anybody if I were in her place. Somewhere near the bridge of the song, the bassist, Gilbert, started slamming his feet against the floor. It took some time, but the crowd did catch on and started clapping in unison, which made me quite happy.

Overall, Silk Screaming put on a very enjoyable show. I went in there with expectations set to a lower standard and was completely ripped off my hinges by how much stage presence they have. They can do nothing but grow; grow as a band, grow their fan base, and definitely, grow into bigger venues. I wish them the best of luck until I am able to catch them again. Keep your eyes peeled for them you darling indie music lovers!
