M For Montreal Day 3 – 11.20.10

La Patère Rose was a good start to the night and the crowd loved every minute of their short set but the night would hit a lull with the next band, which was Pascale Picard and her band. She seemed like an obvious misstep as the crowd went from bopping their heads and cheering wildly to sort of just standing still and waiting for it to be over. Luckily for everyone in attendance the next band to play was Montreal metal band, Priestess. Well I shouldn’t say lucky for everyone because there were some obviously very surprised and appalled people near the front of the stage when a full-on mosh pit broke out. I will concede that I am not much of a metal fan, but these guys were actually pretty impressive and much more entertaining then the previous act. And the night would only get better from then on.

The Dears were next and while these guys know how to put on a show, the half an hour time allowance didn’t really give them enough time to show what they really can do. Given the proper amount of stage time these guys will always impress, but on Saturday night we only got a little taste of their potential. The band stuck to mostly new material from their forthcoming full length entitled Degeneration Street but as a treat to their older fans they finished up their set with “Lost in the Plot” from their 2003 release, No Cities Left and left the stage to rapturous applause.

It became very quickly apparent that there were a lot of Misteur Valaire fans in the house on Saturday night as the band took the stage to a one of the biggest ovations of the night. They did not disappoint and gave the hungry crowd by far the best performance of the night as they rolled through a nice selection of tracks from their incredible latest release, Golden Bombay. If you didn’t get enough (I know I didn’t) the band will be back at Metropolis on Februrary 17th so be sure not to miss that.

DJ/producer superstar Ghislain Poirier finished off the night in grand fashion with his catchy electronica and put an end to another great festival by the M For Montreal crew. Until next year!
