Stars – Metropolis – 12.04.10
Opening up the evening was Montreal’s up-and-coming Young Galaxy, who by the looks of the crowd’s reaction, have already made quite an impact on the Montreal music scene. Performing mostly material from their first two releases, it was made evident that the transition from studio to stage is not one that would take away from their familiar sound. Catherine McCandless’ warm yet powerful voice coupled with the well balanced instrumental compositions made for a very enjoyable auditory experience. The two new songs that were performed presented a more alternative synthesized sound, much to the crowd’s approval.
With the success that The Five Ghosts has had worldwide, Stars I was interested in seeing whether the live performance would do justice to the albums acclaim. From the first note played to the final salute, not one person left the venue disappointed. The band bombarded the crowd with tunes from their entire repertoire; performing The Five Ghosts in its majority, including the already vastly popular tracks “Wasted Daylight” and “We Don’t Want Your Body” under a shower of bubbles and fantastic lighting. They also performed other crowd favourites, such as “Take Me To The Riot” and an acoustic “Ageless Beauty” which still gives me goose bumps at the mere mention of the song title. The evening was obviously marked by lead singer Torquil Campbell’s usual stage antics as he made mention of Charles Manson’s “under-rated” musical genius but also took the opportunity to announce Amy Millan’s pregnancy. As he so well put it, “this is the first time that two pregnant singers have ever taken the stage in one night” (Catherine McCandless also just happens to be with child as well). The band ended with “Changes” marking the end of a fnatastic show. On the behalf of the entire team at MeetYouAtTheShow, we would like to congratulate both Amy Millan and Catherine McCandless on their pregnancies and wish them all the best in the future. – David Gosselin
