Tokyo Police Club + Two Door Cinema Club – Club Soda – 01.16.11
In this case, some girl stole one of Tokyo Police Club’s tambourines, and literally ran off with it. I don’t know if she realizes this, but it is not going to make Graham want her anymore than he already does (which he doesn’t.) If anything, it is upsetting and she’ll be lucky enough if he even forgives her. All it really does is make her look like one of those twelve year olds who shriek at the mere mention of Justin Bieber. I believe it is an embarrassment to the city of Montreal to have something like this happen; it just gives people a reason to diss us and it puts a downer on what could have been an excellent show… Yes, even if it’s only “just” a tambourine.
Moving onto happier thoughts, Sunday’s show was an estrogen-filled blast! It is safe to say that the majority of the population of the venue consisted of girls; riled up girls that were ready to party, or at least scream their heads off. When opening math-rock, grunge band PS I Love You took the stage, I was taken aback by all the commotion that was already going on in the crowd. Turns out the loud and greatly skilled duo have been getting their name out there since their last visit in Montreal, and have been gaining a lot of good feedback with their debut LP, Meet Me At The Muster Station.
When the time came for Two Door Cinema Club to take the stage, the ladies had gone absolutely nuts. I’ve never been to a legitimate boy band concert before, but I believe this is as close as it gets. The crowd was ten folds wilder than the first time I saw the band live at the Sala Rossa about a year back. I even witnessed a girl accidentally elbow her boyfriend in the nose from all the excitement. The boys played the songs off their debut album, Tourist History, and a new track called “Hands Off My Cash”. The set was filled with sing-alongs, clap-alongs, and cheeky remarks provided by lead singer Alex Trimble, along the lines of “Are you feeling good? That’s what I want; you to feel good!” that were usually reciprocated with comments like “You’re so fucking sexy!” and so on. One thing’s for certain, the band really appreciated the liveliness of the crowd and mentioned that every show they’ve had in Montreal has “been a ride” so far, but that this time seemed to have surpassed every other.
After a gruelling twenty minutes of being tortured with Tom Jones’ “What’s New Pussycat” playing over and over again in the background, Tokyo Police Club finally took the stage and took the crowd out of their misery by starting their set with “Favourite Colour” from their latest release, Champ. They wished the crowd a happy new year and said proudly that this was their eighth time in Montreal. They seemed so much more relaxed and laid-back on stage in comparison to other experiences I’ve had seeing them perform, which is great; they are now completely comfortable with themselves. Apart from having played all their songs off of latest album Tokyo Police Club also treated their fans to some of their oldies, including “Nature Of The Experiment”, “Graves”, ”Be Good”, to name a few, and ”Tesselate” and “Citizens Of Tomorrow” to which the crowd clapped along to. The best part of the set had to be the two-song encore. They played “Favourite Food”, and during an instrumental break, Dave asked if anybody remembered the year 2001. “That was a long time ago,” he said. Then, he invited the guys from Two Door Cinema Club to come up on stage again. They performed a stellar cover of The Strokes’ “Last Night”. A wonderful surprise, and a great ending to a perfectly organized set.
