Cold War Kids – Corona Theatre – 19.03.11

Ottawa’s The Balconies started up the show for the night, and immediately set the bar above and beyond what anyone had expected for an opening band. The classically trained band has obviously been at it for a while, and their incredibly upbeat pop-rock is irresistibly contagious and addictive. Lead singer Jacquie Neville had the audience eating out of the palm of her hand with her overwhelming cuteness. From her bouncy curly hair, beautiful dreamy lashes and the super sweet smile she wore even while she sang and danced, the audience really couldn’t get enough of this young up and coming Ottawa trio. But before I knew it, The Balconies were already closing up their set and walking off stage

I was so satisfied with the show thus far that I had almost forgotten about Cold War Kids who were to come on shortly afterwards. But sure enough, their performance was just as enjoyable and entertaining as expected. They had an incredible array of lights which was another visual bonus of the night, and all the members had incredible stage presence as they interacted with each other as they played. They blew through song after song, without letting up for a break or to let the energy die down at all. They treated their faithful audience to newer songs that they have been working on that were greatly appreciated by everyone in the room. A flawless performance of songs both old and new, with intensity and awesome visuals made for an unforgettable night.
