Hey Ocean! – Divan Orange – 30.06.11
On Monday June 27th, 2011, Hey Ocean!, Sweet Mother Logic and Folly & the Hunter played at Divan Orange. The night started out slowly with not many people in the venue, but as it got darker outside, a decent crowd accumulated.
Handsome Furs – Cabaret Mile End – 25.06.11
“Variety is the spice of life.” A total cliché, sure – but true, nonetheless. Handsome Furs, USA Out of Vietnam and Tops came together last humid and hazy Saturday night to prove right this old adage to a sweaty throng of young Montrealers, and to flip my world upside down. After gracelessly falling up my stoop, arms flailing and groceries flying in the a.m., smashing my shins and breaking the stairs machine at the gym that afternoon and running out of cigarettes by early evening I fully expected my Saturday night to include my getting hit by a bus or a tornado touching down on top of Mile End Cabaret. What I wasn’t prepared for was a hell of a good time and a show evocative of the psychedelic chocolate river boatride from the original “Willy Wonka”. Read more…
This Week In Montreal
Montrealers should really feel lucky this week. Let’s face it, how many times do we have Tony Bennett, Dave Brubeck, Peter Frampton and Kaki King playing at the same time as Hey Ocean!, The Dears, White Denim, Mazes, Jaga Jazzist, The Roots and Weezer. The Jazz Fest takes full swing this week with a variety of amazing shows going on all over the city. You may have trouble deciding what to see this week due to the volume of great shows but we hope to make things a little easier by giving you our highlights for the week. Read more…
Ohbijou Ready New Album
On September 27th, 2011, Toronto’s Ohbijou will release their third studio album, named Metal Meets on Last Gang Records. We know many of you are probably already familiar with their music, but for those that have never heard of Ohbijou, if you’re a fan of Andrew Bird, Hey Rosetta! and Blonde Redhead, Ohbijou’s music will most definitely interest you.

Cults – Il Motore – 19.06.11
Cults first appeared on the internet map, in the form of a vague and informal bandcamp website. Let this be a lesson to all you casual jammers – a small bandcamp website that’s meant to hold a sample of some of the fun recordings you do with your friends, might slowly come to be picked up by a blog here, a blog there, and eventually, the blog (pitchfork, I guess), and you will suddenly find yourself touring the continent. Freedom or Death Release Free Single, Play Osheaga Kick Off Party
Freedom or Death are a Toronto based duo made up of classically trained pianist and DJ, Fernandez, and vocalist, Sway. The duo have just released a brand new single entitled “This Crowded Room” as a part of their seven-track debut album EGO, which was released on April 26, 2011 through the band’s own imprint Liars & Thieves and via Arts & Crafts.
This Week In Montreal
Festivals galore! While this year’s Suoni Per Il Popolo Festival may be coming to an end this week with performances by Chad VanGaalen, The Strange Boys, Dirty Beaches, D’Eon and more, this week also marks the beginning of this year’s Montreal Jazz Festival. And what better way to kick off this year’s fest than with back to back performances by the legendary Prince at Metropolis. But don’t get too excited unless you already have tickets because both nights are sold out. There are also some great smaller shows going on this week at Club Lambi, Il Motore and Cabaret Mile End so be sure to check them out as well. Last night, just above the bustling street fair that was taking place on St Laurent street, Tullahoma, Tennessee’s Pujol took the stage at Casa Del Popolo along with North Dakota psychedelic pop trio Secret Cities and Edmonton, Alberta’s The City Streets.
