The Dodos + The Antlers – La Tulipe – 15.06.11
The Antlers won the audience over from their first song with passionate playing, sweet melodies and those pitch-perfect ooooos. The band played a well-balanced set of both old favorites and some new, including the underwater-sounding “I Don’t Want Love” from newly-released album Burst Apart. Though they weren’t the headliner, the venue was the most packed during their set; these guys seemed to steal the show.
The Dodos came on after some of the crowd had filtered out (it was getting late on a Wednesday night, after all), but that just opened up an opportunity for many of the people seated at the tables toward the back to move closer to the stage to take in the trio’s danceable folk-pop. The band played a dynamic set, also of older fan-favorites and songs from their new album No Color, including boisterous sing-along “Sleep”. The energy was high all around and those who stayed till the end were treated to a solid set all the way through to the encore.
Two well-loved bands with two brand-new, well-received albums clearly add up to a winner of a concert – a worthwhile evening out even if you had to get up early for work the next morning. (by Natasha Young)
