Interview: The Postelles

Interview: The Postelles

MYATS: You are originally from New York City. How did The Postelles start up as a band?

BILLY: We all met in high school. I was a grade below and spent a year writing songs with Daniel while David and John were off at school. That summer we started jamming and writing a new batch of songs together and knew The Postelles was something we had to pursue.

MYATS: There is a 60‘s rock and roll vibe in your songs and arrangements. Are bands from that era a major influence in your music ? Who else would you cite as influences?

BILLY: I grew up in Woodstock and was always around all different kinds of music, but those bands are what started it all for us. Its the music we want to write. The music we want to add a little Postelles flavor to. We spend hours upon hours in a van every day listening to music. The Band. Sam Cooke. Buddy Holly. Marvin Gaye.

MYATS: You have been very productive, releasing your debut album in June and touring extensively. What are The Postelles up to right now ?

BILLY: More touring. It’s been an amazingly hectic couple of months for us. Currently on the road with The Wombats and then doing a run with The Kooks right after. Trying to work on some new material when we get the chance.

MYATS: You have launched a cover EP, “Summer Undercovers”, in July this year. How did you come up with the idea for a cover record ?

BILLY: We always have a good time throwing covers into our live set. Thought why not record some. Whenever we have off time we try to keep ourselves busy. Got together and picked out a couple of songs we love, and went into the studio.

MYATS: In January, you opened for the great Chuck Berry in St-Louis. How was it to meet a living legend ?

BILLY: It was and always will be one of the highlights of our band career. Not only did we get to play a show with him, but we got to see him in this really intimate venue. Even heard that he “dug” us. We almost died.

MYATS: Within the past year, you have performed at New York City’s fashion week, toured with Interpol and shared stage with Kings of Leon and Alberta Cross. What did you gain from these incredible experiences?

BILLY: We’ve gotten to experience touring on several different levels. You never really know what to expect and it definitely keeps things interesting. Different settings for our instruments and sound on stage. How to react with different sized crowds. You pick up a lot from the bands you are playing with.

MYATS: You will be playing in Montreal, November 22nd, with The Kooks. Are you excited about this ?

BILLY: I think this will be a great tour for us. We’ve had a lot of amazing shows in Montreal and I think this will top them all. They are a great band. Should make for an epic show.
