Ra Ra Riot – The Orchard

Ra Ra Riot – The Orchard

The Orchard is Ra Ra Riot’s sophomore album, released August 24th, 2010 on Arts & Crafts/Barsuk. Listening to it for the first time is like finally reading the sequel to a book series you started years ago. The first chapters are slow, and you feel doubtful about whether you are going to enjoy it as much as you did when you first started the series. But you slowly realize that as they roll by you are becoming more and more immersed into that magical universe you once fell in love with; this story that comes to too quick of an end. Read more…

The Most Serene Republic – Bar St. Laurent II – 08.27.10

The Most Serene Republic – Bar St. Laurent II – 08.27.10

Dear Montreal’s indie music loving scene, please eat some jumping beans or jitterbugs next time you go to a show. You are too stiff. With that said, on Friday August 27th, I arrived at Bar St-Laurent II a little after ten-thirty, having underestimated the level of difficulty involving biking up Clark street with a full bladder.

Maps & Atlases – Il Motore – 08.08.10

Maps & Atlases – Il Motore – 08.08.10

Do you ever look at someone and just think, wow s/he has gotten it easy? No matter how secure we are with ourselves and our abilities, sometimes we can easily fall into this negative mental trap. Believe it or not, highly successful musicians are regular folk, and thus at times inevitably fall prey to perhaps the worst of the seven deadly sins, envy. While some bands toil away for years in hopes of making a break, other bands somehow manage to catch some online buzz that launches them into the indie stardom stratosphere. Not all bands are lucky enough – if you see this as lucky – to become a power blogger’s latest pet project. The most successful of bands are those that are able to keep any envy in check and remain confident in their craft. Read more…

MGMT + Violens – Metropolis – Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

MGMT + Violens – Metropolis – Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

Over these past few weeks Montreal has been one hot city. With temperatures rising higher than 32 degrees Celsius (sorry all you Americans, I don’t speak Fahrenheit), and humidity that makes hair of all types become frizzy dos, last night would have been one cooler exception after tumultuous rainstorms. And I say would have been rather than was because if you thought the past few weeks were unbearably hot, then you have no idea what it was like at Metropolis last night. The MGMT gig has been sold out for some time now, and Metropolis filled up rather quickly after the doors opened around 6:30. Read more…

Osheaga 2010 Day 2 Recap

Osheaga 2010 Day 2 Recap

Well that’s all folks. Osheaga 2010 has come to an end. I think it’s safe to say a good time was had by all and despite the long lemonade lines (and consequently long bathroom lines) the entire weekend went off without a hitch. I think we all deserve to finally put our feet up and relax after standing for twenty hours with only a little rest in between days. For those of you that missed it or would like to re-live the day all over again, here is our recap of a star-studded day 2 at Osheaga 2010. Read more…

Osheaga 2010 Day 1 Recap

Osheaga 2010 Day 1 Recap

Day 1 of Osheaga 2010 is in the books and I think we can all safely say that it was a huge success. Great music, perfect weather, good food, lots of free stuff and a grand finale of Arcade Fire is enough to make anyone giddy, but this day was much more than a long wait for Arcade Fire to play. The day boasted a lineup of some of the hottest names in the music world today and we were there to document it all for you. Keep reading to find out how it all went down.

Fool’s Gold – Le Belmont – Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Fool’s Gold – Le Belmont – Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

I believe that everybody can agree with the fact that set times are a pain in the behind. It is an unwritten rule amongst concert goers that if a show is to start at a certain time, chances are that it will probably start later. Much later. Bands are hardly ever punctual. Neither are crowds. Upon arrival at the Belmont this Tuesday, I was pleasantly relieved. The Tony Castles were supposed to go on at 8pm. Although I arrived forty-five minutes late, and although all the members of Fool’s Gold were accounted for, the opening band had not even showed up yet! So I set out to buy some gum and let time pass a bit. Read more…

Au Revoir Simone + Alexa Wilding + The Hoof and the Heel – La Sala Rossa – Friday, July 16th, 2010

Au Revoir Simone + Alexa Wilding + The Hoof and the Heel – La Sala Rossa – Friday, July 16th, 2010

It has become my quest this summer to become more in touch with the performing side of the music world. Seeing that I am truly ambitious and quite motivated, I have started taking singing lessons, began plucking away at my Norman acoustic guitar, and have even gotten out my moleskin to write up any witty lyric I may think up while strolling through the park. Once I become less of a spaz and am able to successfully combine the strumming and singing all into one audible piece, the next step is to be brave enough to take it to the stage. In the mean time, I have been looking for inspiration here, there and everywhere… and what better place to look than the lovely Sala Rossa…After interviewing Alexa Wilding a few weeks back, I was really eager to see her and the fabulous Au Revoir Simone take to the Montreal stage. Phantogram – Casa Del Popolo – Saturday, July 10th, 2010

Phantogram – Casa Del Popolo – Saturday, July 10th, 2010

The concert-going experience is composed of several crucial elements. There is the show itself; the lights, the music, and the hush of the crowd. Then there is the conviviality of the event; the pre-show drink, the mid-show smoke, and the post-show outdoor congregation.  One of the most overlooked elements is the expectations one has going into the show, and how these expectations are self-actualized or unfulfilled.
