I believe that everybody can agree with the fact that set times are a pain in the behind. It is an unwritten rule amongst concert goers that if a show is to start at a certain time, chances are that it will probably start later. Much later. Bands are hardly ever punctual. Neither are crowds. Upon arrival at the Belmont this Tuesday, I was pleasantly relieved. The Tony Castles were supposed to go on at 8pm. Although I arrived forty-five minutes late, and although all the members of Fool’s Gold were accounted for, the opening band had not even showed up yet! So I set out to buy some gum and let time pass a bit.

It has almost become my quest this summer to become more in touch with the performing side of the music world. Seeing that I am truly ambitious and quite motivated, I have started taking singing lessons, began plucking away at my Norman acoustic guitar, and have even gotten out my moleskin to write up any witty lyric I may think up while strolling through the park. Once I become less of a spaz and am able to successfully combine the strumming and singing all into one audible piece, the next step is to be brave enough to take it to the stage. In the mean time, I have been looking for inspiration here, there and everywhere… and what better place to look than the lovely Sala Rossa...After interviewing Alexa Wilding a few weeks back, I was really eager to see her and the fabulous Au Revoir Simone take to the Montreal stage.

The concert-going experience is composed of several crucial elements. There is the show itself; the lights, the music, and the hush of the crowd. Then there is the conviviality of the event; the pre-show drink, the mid-show smoke, and the post-show outdoor congregation. One of the most overlooked elements is the expectations one has going into the show, and how these expectations are self-actualized or unfulfilled.

I'm sure these kids "couldn't wait for the summer and the Warped Tour". But one band I got to check out especially was Tampa, Florida's Automatic Loveletter, lead by front woman Juliet Simms.

A serious lack of sleep led to some serious brain cramping as I was on my way to Divan Orange to check out three Canadian bands that I have been hearing really good things about. Why did I find myself standing in front of a burned down and boarded up Green Room instead of the quaint Divan Orange? I wish I knew. But after gathering my wits and some Google Mapping of a venue that I have been to countless times, I stumbled into the proper venue which was roaring with the sounds of Kelowna, BC's We Are The City.

I've been told that I have rather morose taste in music. Yeah I'll be the first to admit I tend to gravitate towards the darker end of the musical spectrum. Growing up on Joy Division, The Smiths and The Velvet Underground, I mostly forewent the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC phase (but in all honestly I had a weird fascination with 98, gross I know). However I have several dark secrets in my cultural closet. Along with my love for reality dating shows and the Olsen Twins... I love saccharine girl pop. I'm not talking about Miley Cyrus or Christina Aguilera here, but - in my defense - the wholesome and heartwarming singer/songwriter stuff. The kind warm and fuzzy stuff that makes you want to be Zooey Deschanel twirling hoola hoops or Feist setting off fireworks. So when I came across Sally Seltmann I hit the jackpot. Seeing Sally Seltmann perform this Thursday was like a dose of musical Prozac.
