Review: Lyonnais – Want For Wish For Nowhere

Review: Lyonnais – Want For Wish For Nowhere

Lyonnais is a four-piece band from Atlanta, Georgia comprised of T. J Blake, Lee Tesche, Farzad Moghaddam, and Farbod Kokabi. Defying the social conventions behind rock music, Lyonnais almost single handedly help keep Atlanta on the musical map with their debut album Want For Wish For Nowhere, which they produced and recorded themselves.  Emerging from the same musical scene as Deerhunter and Bear In Heaven, Lyonnais construct music which will hypnotize and overpower your senses. Want For Wish For Nowhere is out now via Hoss Records.

Review: Los Campesinos! – Hello Sadness

Review: Los Campesinos! – Hello Sadness

Winter and summer, tea and coffee, a hug and a kick in the pants. Some of the juxtapositions to try to explain Los Campesinos’ transition from 2007′s Hold On Now Youngsters, to this year’s release Hello Sadness.  Since the first outing there have been enough line-up changes to rival The Fall and due to these they’ve gone from sickly twee-pop to… Depressing twee-pop? Hello Sadness, written in the wake of Gareth’s recent breakup with Slow Club‘s Rebecca Taylor; and to be honest, who wouldn’t be depressed with that! The whole album is setup by this, as well as some death and morality to go with it. A cocktail Ben Gibbard would be happy to drink, I’m sure. Read more…

It appears that Mike Kinsella can do no wrong. From his work in previous projects Cap’n Jazz, Joan of Arc, Owls and most notably, American Football, he returns with Ghost Town; his sixth studio album, under the moniker Owen. The album will be released this coming Tuesday, November 8, alongside The Jezabels’ new record, Prisoner. Note: We try to believe music-loving folks still enjoy buying albums. Read more…

Ra Ra Riot – The Orchard

Ra Ra Riot – The Orchard

The Orchard is Ra Ra Riot’s sophomore album, released August 24th, 2010 on Arts & Crafts/Barsuk. Listening to it for the first time is like finally reading the sequel to a book series you started years ago. The first chapters are slow, and you feel doubtful about whether you are going to enjoy it as much as you did when you first started the series. But you slowly realize that as they roll by you are becoming more and more immersed into that magical universe you once fell in love with; this story that comes to too quick of an end. Read more…

Murder Ford Monument – Self Titled

Murder Ford Monument – Self Titled

Who was it that said music is most meaningful when it arouses some of your deepest emotions? I think that might have been me, but either way, Montreal collective Murder Ford Monument‘s debut, self-titled LP is one of those albums that is best enjoyed when you invest yourself in it, rather than having it as casual background music.

The Besnard Lakes Are The Roaring Night

The Besnard Lakes Are The Roaring Night

Montreal’s own The Besnard Lakes have come out with their follow up to their 2007 Polaris Music Prize nominated album, The Besnard Lakes are the Dark Horse. This time around The Besnard Lakes are The Roaring Night tells the story of spies and double agents as they fight against one another in a potentially false war. It is a dreamy, fuzzy yet romantic trip to a surreal world worth all of the repeated listens that it will get.

The Wind Up Radio Sessions – Red Brick House

The Wind Up Radio Sessions – Red Brick House

The Wind Up Radio Sessions started their musical journey in Dundas, Ontario, where brothers Dan and Marc Kiely began to write songs together as The Ewok Folk Sessions. After moving to our fair city of Montreal and meeting Matthew Lazenby, an Ex-Pat from the UK, the three like-minded musicians began composing songs together under a new moniker. And thus, The Wind Up Radio Sessions were born. After releasing an introductory debut EP, the band is now set to unleash upon the world their first full length, entitled Red Brick House (out later this month).

Review: Blockhead – The Music Scene

Review: Blockhead – The Music Scene

Blockhead, who you may recognize from his incredible production work with Aesop Rock, has released his fourth instrumental hip-hop masterpiece on Ninja Tune Records (Kid Koala, Amon Tobin, Jaga Jazzist). The Music Scene is the perfect road trip album, with its flawless, chill-out vibe and irresistible beats and grooves. The lack of vocals gives the listener a rare freedom to explore and find their own meaning in the madness. Read more…
