Zola Jesus – Il Motore – 21.04.11
After days of miserable drizzle, the skies cleared on Thursday evening and, so excited to get outside and head north to Il Motore for Cult of Youth and Zola Jesus, I left my cigarettes on the coffee table. Damn. That’s excited. Upon entering the venue, its blood-red mood lighting was decidedly less honeymoon suite and more welcome-to-the-depths-of-Hades – perfect for the Cult of Youth’s goth-rock sound and the beautifully haunting ballads of Zola Jesus. Beach Fossils + Craft Spells – La Sala Rossa – 19.04.11
Beach Fossils are an American, Brooklyn-based, Indie rock band that has, (unsurprisingly) garnered comparisons as a less frantic sister alongside the recent Wavve of its lo-fi brethren. But before we tuck this band away in a list of bands that the internet (the Authorities, whatever) are starting to say all sound the same – let’s maybe take a moment to think about what we like about these bands. Furthermore, if stubborn reverberation, defiantly plucking at strings, and quietly conversing with the audience through a series of melodic vocals is wrong – than neither Beach Fossils, nor Tuesday night’s Sala Rossa’s crowd want to be right. Just look at them! Pleasantly cradling away to paced drums, and almost consciously ignorant to inaudible vocals. This is a date night. Read more…
Photos: TV On The Radio – Metropolis – 17.04.11
Last night indie rock powerhouse TV On The Radio made their highly anticipated appearance at Metropolis in Montreal to present their latest LP, Nine Types of Light, which was released on April 11th via Interscope Records. MYATS photographer Eli Larin was there to catch all the action and document the night in photos. Check it out after the jump.
The Black Angels + SUUNS – La Sala Rossa – 12.04.11
The Black Angels‘ latest release was a definite step up from their past two albums in the sense that it incorporated a lot more pulse and a bit less of their quite obvious psychedelic influences. Tuesday night we had the chance to catch them play at la Sala Rossa along with Montreal’s own, SUUNS. Read more…
Wye Oak + Callers – Casa Del Popolo – 10.04.11
Laid-back Montrealers, unworried about getting back to the grind of the week or unwilling to let the weekend finish just yet, ducked into Casa Del Popolo on Sunday night in order to hear Brooklyn’s Callers and Baltimore’s Wye Oak perform their latest. The two groups have been on tour together, Callers promoting their second album Life of Love and Wye Oak in support of their latest, Civilian, and seemed to be enjoying their time sharing the spotlight for one of their last stops on their tour. Those loud experimental Montreal rockers that go by the name Intensive Care have been holed away for the last little while, working like beavers on some new music for us and it’s finally time to hear the fruits of their labour. Along with a brand new website, the band is offering up three new tracks for their forthcoming sophomore LP. We’ve got the tracks streaming after the jump.
Memphis Return With New Album/Play Il Motore April 7th
It has been forever and a day since we have heard anything new from Canadian duo, Memphis. I guess the reasons are good enough. Torquil Campbell, who forms half of Memhpis, is also the head honcho in another very popular Canadian indie rock band. Maybe you’ve heard of them? They’re called Stars. Well when he’s not rocking out with Stars he likes to team up with friend and fellow musician Chris Dumont as Memphis. The duo is back in 2011 with their first new release in five years and an east coast tour to go along with it.
