This Week In Montreal

Festivals galore! While this year’s Suoni Per Il Popolo Festival may be coming to an end this week with performances by Chad VanGaalen, The Strange Boys, Dirty Beaches, D’Eon and more, this week also marks the beginning of this year’s Montreal Jazz Festival. And what better way to kick off this year’s fest than with back to back performances by the legendary Prince at Metropolis. But don’t get too excited unless you already have tickets because both nights are sold out. There are also some great smaller shows going on this week at Club Lambi, Il Motore and Cabaret Mile End so be sure to check them out as well. Here’s all the highlights from a very busy week in Montreal. Read more…

Festival Season kicks off this week in Montreal with the 12th annual MUTEK Festival, which celebrates electronic music in all its various forms. Headlining this year’s fest are Amon Tobin and Four Tet, but those are just two of nearly 100 artists scheduled to perform at this year’s fest. That’s not all that’s going on this week however. Lissie, Javelin, Future Islands, This Will Destroy You and Aloe Blacc all have shows lined up for this week and Montreal’s own Socalled will be launching his brand new album on Friday night at the Ukrainian Federation. In short, it’s going to be a very busy week for Montreal music lovers. Here’s all the highlights:

While there isn’t much going on in the city tonight, strap your boots on because from Tuesday on the week will just get better and better. Tuesday, Friday and Saturday will be especially tough days to choose a concert since there are at least three great options each night but if you are looking for a show on Wednesday night we’d like to turn your attention to the Arbutus Records fundraiser that will be going on at Casa Del Popolo. The local label will be raising money for the release of Tonstartssbandht‘s Now I Am Become LP that will be released in May and along with Andy Summers from the band performing, Makeout Videotape and Pop Winds will also play. Here’s the full list of highlights for this week.

It wasn’t too long ago that Jeff Tweedy was last in Montreal playing at a sold out Olympia Theatre for over 2 hours with his band Wilco. This Friday, Tweedy will be back at L’Olympia, this time playing solo for what I’m sure will be a just as impressive amount of people. But that’s not the only good thing happening this week. Don’t miss the first annual Signal To Noise benefit concert series being put on by CJLO to raise money for CJLO and UNICEF’s Pakistan flood relief effort. The series will take place from Tuesday to Thursday this week at Casa Del Popolo and will feature some of Montreal’s best bands including Hexes & Ohs, USA out of Vietnam and Snailhouse. Here’s the full picture for this week in Montreal. Read more…

Pop Montreal Preview – Part 2 (Thursday, Sept. 30)

The second day of Pop Montreal takes place this year on Thursday, September 30th. While day one offered us some really interesting shows we are going to go out on a limb and say day 2 at Pop Montreal this year will be the best day of the festival. One after another, we’ve got a stacked lineup on day 2 which will obviously lead to some very tough decisions on your part. We would like to try and make those decisions a little easier by giving you our picks for a busy day 2 at Pop Montreal 2010.

Woods + Real Estate – Club Lambi – Saturday March 13th, 2010

Before Saturday night’s show at Club Lambi featuring Valleys, Real Estate, and Woods, I was curious about something.  How many people would Real Estate and Woods pull in, in the former’s first trip to Montreal?  As it said on Facebook, the tickets were selling fast and that proved to be true given the turn out last night, as the venue was packed.
