Last night’s show at Sala Rossa was truly one of the hottest shows in Montreal this summer. And by hot, not only do I mean the show was sold out days before doors opened, I also mean the sweat-pouring-down-your-face kinda hot. Hosted by Indie Montreal, Sala Rossa was packed solid with barely any room to breathe. This Week In Montreal
While last week was a bit of a quiet week for shows, the Montreal concert scene gets back into full swing this week with a number of great shows. Wednesday is an especially busy night with Jeff Mangum’s highly anticipated sold out show at Cabaret Mile End, but that’s not the only show happening on Wednesday night. We’ve also got Dom and Honheehonhee playing at Il Motore and The Naked & Famous and Winter Gloves playing at La Sala Rossa. How many times have you put the radio on and the first thing that comes to mind is, ‘oh not Lady Gaga again’, or ‘if I hear one more Justin Bieber song I’m going to flip’? The truth is there aren’t many music groups you can listen to over and over again and never get sick of. I for one am the first to admit I even get sick of some of my favorites after hearing them one too many times on my ipod. But once you come across a band whose music seems to always be fresh in your mind, no matter what time of day or night, no matter how many times you’ve heard it, it’s genuinely a magical moment. This Week in Montreal
We don’t mean to make this edition of This Week in Montreal into a trend report, but there are some patterns at play this week that are begging to be distilled. First, if this week is any indication, there seems to be some 90s nostalgia lingering about. With performances by indie rock veterans Superchunk and Teenage Fanclub, dad rockers have never seemed hipper. Second, if you are a relatively attractive male, have some vocal tent, and are able to write some lyrics that will make the ladies swoon, then your future is bright. Acoustic performances by Sea Wolf and The Tallest Man on Earth, who fulfill all the above prerequisites, are sure to not be missed. Labour Day weekend always brings up mixed feelings in many. Many people see it as a happy time because of the fact that there’s no work on Monday. But the more pessimistic among us will always point out that after Labour Day is when the weather usually takes a turn for the worse as the coming winter usually begins to rear it’s ugly head shortly thereafter. Busking For Change Montreal
Yesterday you may have noticed that your local busker’s had a little bit of a different aura surrounding them. You may have also noticed unusually large crowds of people gathering around to watch, along with green and red buckets that said War Child on the side. Well, if you hadn’t already guessed, these weren’t just your ordinary buskers. In fact, the buskers that you may have seen at Berri-UQAM and Place Des Arts metro stations and at various locations around the Eaton’s Center yesterday were some of Montreal’s finest musicians and pop stars, playing their hearts out for a very worthy cause.
